Emperor Kanmu established the capital in Kyoto in 794 and built Toji Temple in 796 as a temple to guard its eastern side.
About 30 years later, Emperor Saga honored the founder of Shingon sect of Esoteric Buddhism, Kukai known as Kobodaishi by granting this temple to him.
This five-story pagoda is 55 meters high reconstructed in 1644.
It is said that this histrical structure is a landmark of Kyoto.
The present one was built with a donation from Tokugawa Iemitsu.
This five-story pagoda is almost as high as the “Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Toji Temple consists of the Main Hall, Lecture Hall, Founder’s Hall, Ordination Hall, and the Five-story pagoda.
