Kyoto Gallery

☆Kyoto Gallery☆【 Nijo Castle】

I visited Nijo Castle in Kyoto.
It is extremely hot today in Kyoto city.😝
I explain a bit difference between Nijo Castle and other castles.
The castle was designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
It was completed by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu who unified Japan in 1603.
It was built for administrative purpose, not military because in that time Japan was peaceful country under Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo period which began in 1603 and ended in 1867.
Nijo Castle served as the official Kyoto’s residence of the Tokugawa family and their retainers when they visited Kyoto.
Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu wanted to demonstrate his power by building a gorgeous castle.
The main tower of the castle was destroyed by lighting in 1750.
In the grand chanber of this histric castle, the last Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu announced “Taisei Hokan”, or the return of government power to Emperor in 1868 when Tokugawa Shogunate stepped down.

The castle became the property of the imperial family in 1868.
It was donated to the Kyoto city in 1939.
