Ferry

Four main islands of Japan are connected with each other by bridges and tunnels, but many smaller islands can only be reached by ship. But even between the main islands, ferries can be an interesting, if not particularly fast alternative to trains, buses and planes.

Tokai Kisen runs high speed ferries (jetfoils) between Tokyo's Takeshiba Ferry Terminal and Izu Oshima   (about two hours, around 7,000-7,500 yen one way, two departures per day)
