In this tour, you will visit Kadonowaki Elementary School Ruins in Ishinomaki city on the Pacific coast which was devastated in the 2011 tsunami.

By visiting the ruins, you will learn more about the events of the day. But you will also know how the rebuilding project has almost completed in the area.

When you arrive at Sendai Station, you will hop on a local train before taking a ferry ride across Matsushima Bay, which is known as one of the “scenic trio” of Japan. There are about 260 small islands covered by tiny pine trees on the bay.

After 50-minute cruise, you will head to a local restaurant to have lunch. It’s fun to eat some sea food dishes there. Eating oyster is highly recommended, since Matsushima produces many oysters during the season.

After eating lunch, you will take the train to Ishinomaki, one of the coastal cities affected y the tsunami. When the wave struck, just under half of Ishinomaki City was completely devastated and of the 150,000 residents over 3,000 people were confirmed dead and more than 400 people are still missing.

On arrival in Ishinomaki, you will ride on a taxi. Luckily enough, some of the taxi drivers are storyteller, so you may ask any questions about tsunami. The first place we visit in Ishinomaki is Hiyoriyama Hill. This is the place where many of residents took refuge when the wave struck.

Next place you will visit is the Kadonowaki district which was one of the worst affected areas in Ishinomaki. Here you will visit Kadonowaki Elementary School Ruins. This building was used as an elementary school before tsunami, but it was burnt by fire and some of the buildings were destroyed. It was changed to a memorial facility. Inside the museum, you will see many exhibitions related to tsunami.

At the end of the day, you will make your way back to Sendai.
